Description
The meaning of whiplash
The most obvious meaning of whiplash is actually the flexible part of a whip that lashes, but Iโm guessing that youโre probably looking for the other meaning which is an injury caused by a severe jerk to the head. You would usually suffer from this condition if youโve had a car accident.
Symptoms of whiplash
If youโve had a car accident and received a severe jerk to your head and neck, then itโs possible youโre suffering from whiplash. The symptoms can be:
- Stiffness of the neck
- Pain in the neck, shoulders, lower back, arm or hand
- Dizziness or brain fog
- Ringing in your ears
- A numb feeling in your arm or hand
- Sleeplessness
Sleeplessness alone can create many other symptoms, e.g., tiredness, irritability and poor concentration. We all need a good nightโs sleep.
How do you know if you have whiplash/what does whiplash feel like?
If youโve got whiplash, the first point to note is that youโve been in a car accident or some sort of vehicle that has caused your head to flick forwards and backwards. Itโs this action that causes the whiplash. The most obvious feelings of whiplash are pain in the neck, shoulders, arms and lower back. Numbness in your hands or your arms can also be associated with whiplash. The good news is most of these symptoms subside naturally.
Long term effects of whiplash
Whiplash can become chronic as your mind continues to relive the event. This happens because, at the moment of impact, your subconscious mind thinks that you may be about to die. This thought hits the eject button, so you literally jump out of your skin. A little while later, after surviving the crash, the driver of your mental vehicle is still outside. This dissociated position has been evidenced in many trauma studies. The emotional memory image (EMI) that is created as a result of the accident continually streams the movie into your mind. This informational download perpetuates the flow of cortisol which in turn maintains the pain. Using the Split-second Unlearning method, the mind and body can rapidly be reconnected, removing the pain almost instantly.
Neck Injuries
The most common form of neck injuries, whiplash or neck sprain are associated with motor vehicle accidents, falls or sports related impacts. They are all examples of physical trauma, which cause soft tissue injuries to the neck muscles or even fractures to the spine. The emotional state that youโre in whilst receiving this physical trauma, can result in a psychological trauma. This additional trauma can develop into a chronic condition, which can continue far longer than usual. If itโs been longer than 3 months and the pain still persists, maybe itโs time to consider getting professional help to remove this emotional barrier.
Neck and back pain after a car accident
If youโve been in a car accident and your head has been rapidly flung forwards and back, the chances are that you have whiplash. This can cause neck and back pain in the following days or weeks after the accident. Itโs more typical to occur with a rear end shunt.

How long does whiplash last/whiplash recovery time
Whiplash can take anywhere between a few days, weeks or even up to 3 months to heal/recover. However, after saying this, there are those for whom the physical trauma has become psychological. The psychophysiological impact can then lead to chronic conditions, pain, numbness, sleeplessness etc. The emotional memory image (EMI) that was created at the scene of the accident, continually streams the entire event as though it is happening in real time. Over and over, the mind plays out the scenario. The downside of this being that all of the neurochemistry of the event keeps on flooding the system. Itโs this subconscious action that is the root cause of the chronic condition. Removing or clearing the EMI is vital to switching off the stress response from the brain. As soon as this occurs balance is restored.
How to treat whiplash/hypnotherapy for whiplash
If we assume that youโve had medical treatment, at the very least seen a physiotherapist. 3 months has also passed since your accident, then hypnotherapy is a wonderful way to relax your mind and body. After 3 months, you are now in the realms of โchronicโ. This means there is a psychological element involved with your healing process. Therefore a psychophysiological approach is needed to get you back on the road to recovery (pardon the pun)!

Why this works
The soft tissue heals in weeks. The whiplash that lasts for years is the body still bracing for an impact it has already had โ bracing against an Emotional Memory Image โ a picture the mind took in a split second of overwhelm and has been replaying ever since, firing the stress response every time. Clear the image and the body has nothing left to react to.
