What is Trigeminal neuralgia

Trigeminal neuralgia or tic douloureux is a severe chronic pain that affects the facial area, giving the feeling of an electric shock in the gums, teeth or jaw. Trigeminal is the cranial nerve and neuralgia is defined as brief intense stabbing or burning pain, caused by irritation or damage to a nerve.

The definition of trigeminal neuralgia is trigeminal – fifth cranial nerve, neuralgia – an intense stabbing or burning pain, caused by damage or irritation to a nerve or group of nerves.

Trigeminal neuralgia symptoms

Trigeminal neuralgia symptoms include a sharp stabbing or burning pain, in and around the jaw, teeth and gums. Other symptoms of trigeminal neuralgia make include difficulty eating, drinking and brushing your teeth, as touch around this area can by hypersensitive. Symptoms can vary between 5 and 50 episodes per day.
